چکیده

Within a dense environment (ρ ≈ 10 atoms=cm) at ultracold temperatures (T < 1 μK), a single atom excited to a Rydberg state acts as a reaction center for surrounding neutral atoms. At these temperatures, almost all neutral atoms within the Rydberg orbit are bound to the Rydberg core and interact with the Rydberg atom. We have studied the reaction rate and products for nS Rb Rydberg states, and we mainly observe a state change of the Rydberg electron to a high orbital angular momentum l, with the released energy being converted into kinetic energy of the Rydberg atom. Unexpectedly, the measurements show a threshold behavior at n ≈ 100 for the inelastic collision time leading to increased lifetimes of the Rydberg state independent of the densities investigated. Even at very high densities (ρ ≈ 4.8 × 10 cm−3), the lifetime of a Rydberg atom exceeds 10 μs at n > 140 compared to 1 μs at n 1⁄4 90. In addition, a second observed reaction mechanism, namely, Rb2 molecule formation, was studied. Both reaction products are equally probable for n 1⁄4 40, but the fraction of Rb2 created drops to below 10% for n ≥ 90.

Probing an Electron Scattering Resonance using Rydberg Molecules within a Dense and Ultracold Gas.

We present spectroscopy of a single Rydberg atom excited within a Bose-Einstein condensate. We not only observe the density shift as discovered by Amaldi and Segrè in 1934, but a line shape that changes with the principal quantum number n. The line broadening depends precisely on the interaction potential energy curves of the Rydberg electron with the neutral atom perturbers. In particular, we ...

Many-body theory of excitation dynamics in an ultracold Rydberg gas

We develop a theoretical approach for the dynamics of Rydberg excitations in ultracold gases, with a realistically large number of atoms. We rely on the reduction of the single-atom Bloch equations to rate equations, which is possible under various experimentally relevant conditions. Here, we explicitly refer to a two-step excitation scheme. We discuss the conditions under which our approach is ...

Simulation of a strong van der Waals blockade in a dense ultracold gas

We report on simulations involving the blockade effect on a dense ultracold gas. The blockade effect is seen when the interaction energy between two excited Rydberg atoms is large enough to shift the two-excitation state out of resonance. In this paper we investigate a system that exhibits a strong van der Waals blockade, where only one out of thousands of atoms can be excited per blockade volu...

Giant Cross Section for Molecular Ion Formation in Ultracold Rydberg Gases.

We have studied the associative ionization of a Rydberg atom and a ground-state atom in an ultracold Rydberg gas. The measured scattering cross section is 3 orders of magnitude larger than the geometrical size of the produced molecule. This giant enhancement of the reaction kinetics is due to an efficient directed mass transport which is accelerated by the Rydberg electron. We also find that th...

Coherent Excitation of Rydberg Atoms in Thermal Vapor Microcells

The coherent control of mesoscopic ensembles of atoms and Rydberg atom blockade are the basis for proposed quantum devices such as integrable gates and single photon sources. So far, experimental progress has been limited to complex experimental setups that use ultracold atoms. Here, we show that coherence times of ∼ 100 ns are achievable with coherent Rydberg atom spectroscopy in μm sized ther...
